Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) is transforming the way we think about computing, communication, and sensing by harnessing the principles of quantum mechanics.

The NSF-funded Quantum Materials, Sensing, and Education Center (QMSEC) at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ´«Ã½ brings together faculty and students from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ´«Ã½, Johns Hopkins University, Colorado State University, Ursinus College, and the University of Pennsylvania to collaboratively explore the frontiers of quantum materials, quantum sensing, and quantum education. QMSEC also partners with national laboratories and industry leaders to prepare the next generation of quantum scientists and engineers.

In celebration of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, QMSEC is proud to host the Inaugural ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ´«Ã½ Quantum Day—a dynamic event designed for students, educators, researchers, and curious minds from high school and beyond. Join us to discover what QISE is, why it matters, and how you can be part of this exciting field.

Keynote Address by Dr. Denise Caldwell

Dr. Caldwell holds a Ph.D. in physics from Columbia University and was a Professor of Physics at the University of Central Florida, prior to beginning her three-decade career at NSF. At NSF she held a series of positions, including ten years as Division Director of the Physics Division. She played a key role in fostering Quantum Information Science throughout NSF and the Federal Government, serving on numerous cross-agency committees and contributing to multiple NSTC documents.

Quantum Information Science, Engineering, and Technology (QISET)

Abstract:

Quantum Information Science (QIS) unites the fundamental theories of Quantum Mechanics and Information Theory to search for new ways in which uniquely quantum phenomena can be used to advance information processing, transmission, measurement, and fundamental understanding.  This talk will provide a brief overview of the historical development of both areas and describe how advances in the underlying theories, combined with technological capabilities, are creating opportunities for the development of new technologies that can open new vistas on precision measurements, communication, and computing.  Emphasis will be placed on how the field can impact a broad spectrum of sciences while highlighting the roles that future scientists, engineers, and technicians in a broad spectrum of disciplines can play in the implementation of this technology.
